Volume 26, No. 505
RESIDENTS in five rural townships within Sagaing Division are the first beneficiaries of a Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) plan to improve countrywide communications, according to the company supplying the technology.
U Ye Myint, the chief executive officer of Fisca enterprise, said late last month that the telephone system has been imported from China via Xinwei company and is able to work through landlines, fibreoptic cables, microwave and satellite. It’s also capable of sending faxes, SMS messages and accessing the internet.
“Because the system works through various carriers, it’s particularly useful in remote regions,” he said.
MPT is set to expand the program countrywide after a successful pilot test in the five towns of Banmauk, Pinlebu, Homalin, Kalewa and Hkamti since June. Full service to those towns was officially announced on December 12. A total of 3100 phone lines have been set up in the five towns, he said.
U Ye Myint added that the exchange, in Mandalay, has a maximum capacity of about 25,000 lines and is intended to service the states and divisions in upper Myanmar.
Another exchange is being built in Toe Gyaung Kalay in South Dagon township that will provide similar services for lower Myanmar, he added.
The phones have seven-digit numbers starting with 90 and followed by the respective area codes. They can be hired by applying to MPT. Hire charges are K500,000 – excluding call charges at K15 per minute – a year.
