THE price of the best quality rice increased in the third week of February compared to the previous week, while onion and garlic prices came down, said traders at the Bayintnaung Wholesale Commodity Exchange Centre. Lower quality rice, cooking oil and meat prices remained unchanged.
Rice: High quality rice price increased by about K1000 per bag (49 kilograms or 108 pounds) while the low-quality rice is stable. The high-quality rice price increased because some traders had begun stockpiling quantities for sale later in the year, so less rice was making its way to the market, said a spokesperson from Shwe War Mandaing rice warehouse. High-quality rice increased to between K24,000 and 24,500 per bag from K23,000; low-quality rice was stable at about K17,000 a bag.
Cooking oil: Groundnut and sesame oil prices remained stable, if high, while the palm oil price fluctuated on whatever the exchange rate per US dollar was, said oil retailers.
Groundnut oil: K3200-3500 per viss (1.6 kilograms or 3.6 pounds), varying according to the brand. Sesame oil: K3300-3600, according to brand. Palm oil: The price on February 23 was K1750.
Onions: Newly harvested onions began flowing into Bayintnaung in the last few weeks, and now beginning to push prices down. High-quality was down from a high of K550 to K450; low-quality was down to K250, from K300.
Garlic: Garlic prices also came down as produce from Shan State wound its way to Bayintnaung, with supply jumping by about 15 percent over last week, said one trader. High-quality garlic prices dropped to about K3000, from K4100 a week earlier; low-quality garlic recorded a smaller drop from K2700 down to K2300.
Meats: Prices remained unchanged in town markets, according to one Kyauktada township market. Chicken: K6000; K5000 (for farmed CP chicken). Pork: K4500. Mutton: K7000. Beef: K4000.
