(Volume 26, No. 513)
A NEW farm zone has been set up in southern Shan State to supply the local region and boost exports.
The 430-acre zone, called Shanyoema, comprises 332 plots of farmland near Hteeyee village, near the road linking Ayetharyar industrial zone with Nyaungshwe township. The location, chosen for its communications links and infrastructure, was selected following a visit to the region by Senior General Than Shwe in late 2008.
The zone is being set up to expand the country’s livestock sector, help increase exports and promote import substitution
“The zone is being set up to expand the country’s livestock sector, help increase exports and promote import substitution,” said Dr Win Myint, head of southern Shan State’s Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department and secretary of the zone’s executive committee. The farm zone was opened on February 11.
The zone has about 50,000 hens, 33 diary cows, 80 local cattle and 275 local goats on an area of 429.67 acres with 332 plots of farm land. Roads, bridges, a well, electricity and water supplies have also been upgraded.
The K218 million cost of the project was met by private investors, and the farmland was allocated by lot, said Dr Win Myint.
“We also plan to have another zone in the region,” said U Win Myint, adding that the livestock produced from the zone supplies the region, as well as Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Bago and elsewhere, but the farm will eventually produce food for export as well.
