Three fish factories fined for over glazing
July 26 - August 1, 2010
THREE fish processing factories were fined last week for excessive glazing, a process by which ice is packed onto the fish to prevent damage. Department of Fisheries (DOF) inspectors found that the glazing exceeded the permitted 20 percent, a meeting of the Myanmar Fisheries Federation heard on July 20.
“We did surprise checks at fish processing factories in Yangon and found three factories glazing fish in excess of the allowed 20pc,” said U Win Myint Maung, director of the Fish Inspection and Quality Control Division of DOF.
The names of the factories and the amount of the fine were not disclosed.
“More glazing means more water in the fish, and buyers have to pay for that water. Glazing too much reduces the quality of fish and can harm the country’s image [as an exporter],” said U Khin Ko Lay, the department’s director general. “However, exporters can request permission from the director general to glaze more than 20pc if necessary, and the glazing percentage must be printed on the package of the export fish.”
