More CDMA connections for Yangon
July 26 - August 1, 2010
DEMAND for CDMA 800MHz telephones has shot upwards since the first week of July when Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) removed a restriction that meant phones could only be used in one township.
A spokesperson for Elite Tech IT Service Company, the sole distributor of reusable identity module (RUIM) cards and prepaid top-up cards, said there had been a large upswing in customers following the MPT announcement in early July.
“We introduced CDMA 800MHz phones on January 20 and demand had been solid since then, even though they could only be used in one registered township. But since MPT allowed the phones to be used everywhere, demand has risen sharply,” he said.
He added that MPT is planning to release another 100,000 lines from July until October.
“MPT is currently issuing 1000 new lines a day. From January to July, MPT had released 60,890 CDMA 800MHz lines in Yangon, and another 18,000 in Mandalay,” he said last week.
Ma Mon, a CDMA 800MHz phone user in Yangon, said the phones were much cheaper than the GSM competition.
“A CDMA 800MHz phone costs K500,000 while a GSM costs K1.2 million,” she said.
