PREPAID cards for CDMA 800MHz phones have been on sale in Mandalay from January 6, said a spokesperson for the sole company distributing the cards.

An Elite Tech company spokesperson said that the CDMA 800MHz phones became available in Mandalay on January 6 and the prepaid cards were launched on the same day.

State-owned Myanma Posts and Telecommunications began accepting applications for the phones, which have eight-digit numbers starting with 91, in November but began rolling the phones out in early January. The hire price is K500,000, excluding the value of the fixed phones or handsets, which start at K55,000 and K60,000 respectively.

“We offer four different value cards: K10,000, K30,000, FEC20 and FEC50. They are scratch cards and users need to type in the required codes to activate the phones,” the spokesperson said.

Call charges are K50 a minute for local calls, K50 for an outgoing SMS, FEC0.90 per minute for overseas calls. All incoming SMS and calls are free of charge.

The FEC cards are limited to international calls, while the kyat cards can make only local calls. Unlike prepaid GSM cards, the CDMA cards can be topped up.

The cards are available at the company’s two showrooms on 77th Road, between 32nd and 33rd streets and at the corner of 65th and Theikpan roads.

He said the company also plans to market the cards in Yangon but failed to give a timeline for this.

MPT previously announced that 100,000 CDMA 800MHz lines would be released in Yangon and 50,000 in Mandalay.
