Japan funds shelter construction

By Shwe Yinn Mar Oo (Volume 26, No. 503)

THE government of Japan has provided a grant of 581 million yen (US$5.6 million) to build schools that will double as cyclone shelters in the Ayeyarwady delta, according to a statement released by the Japanese embassy in Yangon.

The grant notes were signed on December 4 by the Japanese ambassador to Myanmar, Mr Yasuaki Nogawa, and Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha.

The grant will be used to build about 20 schools that will be designed to serve as cyclone shelters for villagers, especially for protection from storm surges. Each of the two-story concrete schools will have the capacity to accommodate all residents of the village in which it is located, the statement said.
