TWO Myanmar officials have left for Israel to study the handling of commodities post-harvest, the Israeli embassy in Yangon has announced.

The two, who left on February 7, are officers of the Myanma Agriculture Service under the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, and Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading under the Ministry of Commerce.

There are currently 115 trainees from Myanmar attending various courses in Israel, the embassy said.

The course, which runs in Tel Aviv until March 4, is entitled “Postharvest Physiology Pathology and Handling of Fresh Commodities”, and is part of Myanmar’s bilateral cooperation program with Israel. The Israeli partners are MASHAV – Israel’s agency for international development cooperation – and the Centre for International Agricultural Development Cooperation, the embassy said.

According to the embassy statement, the main subjects of the program are physiological and pathological factors affecting storage and shelf life, cause and site of loss, standardisation and inspection of fresh produce, quality factors and analysis, prolonging shelf life and other post-harvest technologies.

Israel offers almost 300 international and single-country courses annually for thousands of participants, in subjects including agriculture, medicine and public health, science and technology, management and entrepreneurship, education and economic, social, community and rural development.

According to Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics, in 2009 Israel imported US$200,000 worth of goods from Myanmar, while exporting to Myanmar products worth $4.6 million. A spokesperson from the Israeli embassy in Yangon said trade was mainly focused on agriculture, tourism services, information technology and teak.
