Pyae Ti Oo provides grants to students

THE Pyae Ti Oo Education Foundation will help 10 students further their education at Yangon’s Institute of Medicine through financial grants, its founder announced earlier this month.

The foundation – established in July 2010 by well-known actor Pyae Ti Oo – grants monthly scholarships to high-achieving students from underprivileged back-grounds.

The aim of the scholarships is to encourage academically gifted students to remain in Myanmar rather than move abroad for study or work.

Each student will receive K50,000 a month for the duration of their studies but must adhere to certain rules and regulations. Students who take up the scholarship are required to stay and work in Myanmar for five years after completing their degrees. They are also not permitted to leave the country or get married while they are studying. Poor grades and attendance records are also grounds for termination of support.

The scholarship program was started with revenues from Pyae Ti Oo’s VCD movies earlier this year. The actor is encouraging others to contribute to the program in order to make it more effective.

“I get a lot of pleasure from the foundation and I hope it continues for many years. Everyone can join … and their funds, as well as mine, will be used to better the lives of young students,” Pyae Ti Oo said at a ceremony earlier this month.
