WHAT is the easiest way to ensure Myanmar wins gold at the South East Asian (SEA) Games in 2013? Well a home ground advantage certainly would help, especially if you get to nominate which sports are to be played.
As it happens, Myanmar’s already got SEA Games gold on it’s mind and in preparation for hosting the games it has started to draft a rough proposal of sports which may tip the scales in the country’s favour.
‘We have chosen the sports in which Myanmar can get a lot of gold medals, which suit our athletes and our culture’
U Khin Maung Lwin, the joint general secretary of Myanmar’s Olympic Committee last week told The Myanmar Times that he had started to formulate a rough guide of sports to be submitted to SEA Games officials in April.
SEA Games host countries are allowed to select a certain number of sports which they determine to be in the national interest, however certain sports such as athletics and aquatics are compulsory.
“We have chosen the sports in which Myanmar can get a lot of gold medals, which suit our athletes and our culture,” U Khin Maung Lwin said.
Myanmar plans to nominate 28 sports for the 2013 SEA Games despite hosts Indonesia nominating 36 different sports for the 2011 event.
U Khin Maung Lwin said that the rough draft of sports include athletics, aquatics, archery, badminton, basketball, billiard and snooker, boxing, canoeing, cycling, football, golf, hockey, judo, karate, rowing, yachting, sepak takraw, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, weightlifting, wushu, tennis, chess, bodybuilding, petanque and traditional boat race.
Notable sports being omitted from the draft proposal include gymnastics and bowling.
Certain sports deemed too risqué for Myanmar culture will also be omitted from the draft.
“The beach volley ball competition will not be allowed due to the costume not being suitable for Myanmar women. Competition dance will also not be allowed for the same reason,” U Khin Maung Lwin said.
Myanmar remains hot favourites to host the games in 2013. An official announcement will be made at the SEA Games Federation Council meeting to be held in Indonesia at the end of April.
