Local group to export rice to Haiti
A LOCAL charity is providing rice to earthquake-hit Haiti for a food-for-work program, 7-Day News reported on May 6. The Mon Myat Charity Foundation has provided 1000 bags of rice for the program.
The rice was purchased from the Myanmar Rice Traders Association and is valued at about US$30,000, said foundation president U Maung Sein. The rice left for Haiti by ship on May 5, the second anniversary of the establishment of the foundation, the report said. Mon Myat Charity Foundation was founded on May 5, 2008 after Myanmar was hit by Cyclone Nargis.
Asia World takes on ground handling
GROUND handling services at Yangon International Airport will soon be taken over by local business conglomerate Asia World, The Yangon Times reported on May 13, quoting an airport official.
The report said the company would not take over all operations at the airport yet but would gradually take on more responsibility “step-by-step”, starting with ground handling.
Ground handling covers the loading and unloading of passengers and cargo, “aircraft services” and cleaning of the airport. The cost of these services is covered by the airlines, the report said.
Five Star Shipping Line to up salaries
MYANMA Five Star Shipping Line will begin paying its sailors inter-national standard salaries from June 1, The Yangon Times reported on May 13, quoting a company official.
Previously, the shipping line’s officers received government salaries but now the company has been privatised they are to be paid private sector remuneration. The increased salaries are one of many changes made as a result of the privatisation, the report said. Myanma Five Star Shipping Line employs staff on contracts of six months to one year with salaries ranging from K57,000 to US$5000 a month.
