Trustees plan for Shwedagon birthday

REPRESENTATIVES from countries across the globe will be invited to the 2600th anniversary of Shwedagon Pagoda in 2012, Popular News reported on August 12, quoting board of trustees member U Ba Shwe.

“Shwedagon Pagoda was established 10 months after the Guattama Buddha attained enlightenment,” U Ba Shwe said. “The life of Shwedagon Pagoda is the same as the Buddhist calendar. The Buddhist calendar is going to be year 2600 in 2012 and to mark it we are planning a grand ceremony and will invite people from not only Buddhist countries but all countries across the world,” he said.

He said the board of trustees wanted everybody to know about the pagoda and its history and in 2009 a website about Shwedagon was established.
