13th Street cartoon exhibition revived
“MYANMAR cartoonist U Ba Gyan, a winner of the Alinkar Kyawswa award for his artistic skill, used to hold a cartoon show every year during Tazaungdine festival from the pre-war years to 1997.
“On 13th Street, where he lived, whenever Tazaungdine fell, I went to the street and looked at the cartoons drawn on lanterns and paper,” says U Kyaw Min.
In memory of the cartoonist, U Kyaw Min, owner of Zezawa bookshop, has organised his own cartoon exhibition to continue the lovely custom. However, the new exhibition has been moved to Nant Thar Road, Htarnar quarter in Ahlone township.
The entire road is to be decorated with boards featuring cartoons drawn by 15 seasoned cartoonists and will be up from October 22 to 24 as part of Thadingyut festival.
“When U Ba Gyan passed away, his pupils, including cartoonist U Pe Thein, kept exhibiting cartoons along the road, but unfortunately the custom stopped. Nowadays, most people don’t know about U Ba Gyan’s cartoon show,” said U Kyaw Min.
The street exhibition will include about 100 cartoons. Visitors will be treated to refreshments.
