House Of The Week - Mandalay

Ready-for-rent villa in Mayangone township

MAKE no mistake – this is a big house. The compound is about 10,000 square feet and the two-storey house has about 5000 square feet as well. And it’s just as well that there’s so much space because it’s a long way from downtown, at Thanlawaddy Street, off Pyay Road, in Mayangone township. more

Travel association launches search for ‘Miss Tourism’

A LEADING tourism industry body has launched a search for a young, single Myanmar woman to spearhead the country’s international tourism campaigns.

The Union of Myanmar Travel Association (UMTA) last month put out a call for potential tourism ambass-adors to take part in the first “Miss Tourism” competition, to be held on February 12 at Inya Lake Hotel.

The winner will receive a cash prize – K1 million, or about US$1000 – and will be required to participate in international travel industry events.

The runner up will receive K500,000, while the third-place getter will be awarded K300,000. Two additional prizes of K200,000 each will be given to the contestants judged as having the best costume and being the most photogenic, the association said.

The contest is open to females aged from 14 to 24 years of age inclusive and participants must be single and above five feet three inches (160 centimetres).

The association’s joint-secretary (2), U Aung Din, told The Myanmar Times contestants should have extensive knowledge of tourism in Myanmar.

They will also be required to wear two costumes at the event, one of traditional Myanmar dress and another from one of the country’s many national races, he said.

“The winner of the Miss Tourism competition will have a chance to participate in some international travel shows that the association take parts in to promote Myanmar as a travel destination,” he said. “But we will look at [the winner’s] all-round performance, includ-ing her intellectual abilities, before deciding if she is acceptable to participate in the travel shows.”
Contestants must pay a registration fee of K5000 to participate and application forms can be acquired from the People magazine office at La Pyat Wun Plaza in Dagon township or the Talents & Models agency at Asia Plaza Hotel.

For more information on the competition, contact the UMTA office on (+951) 559-672, 559-673 or the People magazine office on (+951) 250-416, 243-542 or 393-458.
