THE New National Democracy Party has ruled out rejoining the National League for Democracy, at least for the time being.

The Thingangyun township-based party, established by former NLD member U Thein Nyunt earlier this year, had said in April it would reunite with the NLD if the party registered.

But party secretary U Kyaw told The Myanmar Times last week that the party had decided against an immediate return to the NLD fold.

“We decided in April we would cooperate with the NLD but some comments made by senior people in that party are not acceptable to us. We’ll look at the issue again in future,” he said.

He said they would still work closely with the NLD for the “progress of democracy, national reconciliation and other matters both inside and outside the hluttaws”.

The New National Democracy Party is preparing to contest three constituencies in Yangon Region in the by-elections, which are likely to be held in March or April 2012. U Win Shwe will stand in Dagon Seikan, U Phone Myint in Mingalar Taung Nyunt and singer Yatha in Mayangone.

The NLD has indicated it is likely to contest all vacant seats in the by-elections.
