GSM phones have several advantages over their competitors – CDMA and cellular phones – but are more expensive. GSM phones use a SIM card to identify individual phones, whereas CDMA and cellular phones rely on a unique electronic serial number (ESN). These are susceptible to “cloning”, where the ESN is copied and used by another phone, with the usage charged to the original account. Another disadvantage of cellular phones is that, unlike GSM or CDMA, they are unable to send SMS messages.
