Customers name Yangon’s best supermarkets1

Many townships in Yangon can now boast of having at least one supermarket, with more popping up all the time. Myanmar Times’ reporter Zaw Winn investigated the options and asked shoppers to name their favourites.
Ma Mya Thidar | Ko Soe Myint | Ko Myat Hein Htet

MA Mya Thida is a shop owner herself and says her favourite place to shop is Ocean Super Centre.

“Normally I go shopping at Ocean Centre at 9-mile on Pyay Road or to Junction 8 on the same road. I live in Insein township so these centres are convenient for me.”

“I mostly buy things that I need in the kitchen, like snacks and fruit juice for my kids,” she says.

“I love supermarkets because we can get everything we need at one place instead of having to go and visit different shops, which saves time and energy.”

But Ma Mya Thida had something to add about customer service. “I like Ocean the most because it has sufficient car parking and the staff give good service. I get irritated by some sales girls who are too watchful and follow customers around.”

“I would like to suggest that supermarkets should take careful note of the expiry dates on the things they sell because I once bought some outdated food – a pack of Thai-made jelly – and I only just noticed when I was about to use it.”
Ko Myat Hein Htet is a student and rates Ocean very highly.

“I buy things at Ocean quite often but I also go to Super One too; both are most convenient for me.”

“Being a student i happen to buy a lot of stationery,” he says.

“I’d like more supermarkets to open in the cities so that everybody can save time when they are shopping. One-stop shopping at nearby supermarkets is especially useful when we don’t have much time,” he added.

But he is not without a few peeves.

“I must say there are a few things I find irritating at supermarkets – I’d like to see the staff provide better service.

“Sometimes the staff are too forceful in getting customers to leave at closing time. I think it shouldn’t be like this and the staff should be more patient,” he says.

Ko Soe Myint is a car dealer and says he enjoys the convenience that supermarkets offer.

“Mostly I go shopping at Super One Shopping Centre in Tamwe township. I live in Yankin township so it’s not far for me. Whenever I collect my nieces from school we drop in at Super One and I buy them ice cream and other things we need.

“Usually my wife and I go shopping once a week and I would like it if there were more supermarkets around.

“I think that the appliances and produce you buy at supermarkets are more reliable than what you can get at other places. I’d like to suggest that supermarkets include a restaurant where customers can take a break after they finish shopping.”
