Users’ guide to Yangon’s shopping centres

By Htar Htar Khin

Dagon Centre
The Dagon Centre is located at the busy Myaynigone Junction in Sanchaung township and is widely send as Yangon’s most popular shopping centre, especially for young people.

The location is perfect because it offers excellent public transport. Apart from the 216 suburban bus and No 3 minibus services that start in Kyeemyindaing and progress to Shwedagon Pagoda, there are also the No 28, 36, 42, 50, 217 and Golden Visitor buslines that drop passengers out the front. Additionally, the Parami 173 suburban bus runs between South Okkalapa and Thanlyin townships also stops there.

Such extensive transport links ensures the centre is crowded nearly all the time but also guarantees that retailers work hard to offer the latest foods, fashions and accessories for eager shoppers.

With so many people milling around, the centre is noisy and queues can be expected at just about every counter.

Famous outlets at the centre are the MK shop and City Mart on the bottom floor, while the two floors above host a variety of fashion and accessory shops.

Parking outside is tight and those who drive to the centre might need to wait to find a park or choose to leave their car nearby.

Super One
There are two Super One outlets in Yangon: One on Bogyoke road in Pabedan township and the other in Thingangyun township.

The Bogyoke road outlet was one of Yangon’s first malls but is no longer popular with younger shoppers.

What this centre does offer is comparatively cheap and quiet shopping, unlike the nearby FMI Centre and Bogyoke market.

Located in the busy downtown area, there are plenty of buses that service the centre including the No 3, 31, 38, 62, 205 lines.

The Thingangyun outlet, meanwhile, is poorly fed by public transport and the No 39 is one of the few that passes nearby. On the bright side there are plenty of parking spaces for people with their own transport.

Blazon department store
This large department store on U Wisara road in Kamaryut township offers a broad range of foods, appliances and whitegoods for its eager clientele to purchase.

But while the range is fantastic, the centre’s accessibility for many shoppers is not and there are few bus routes along U Wisara.

This is unlikely to affect the generally wealthy shoppers who usually frequent the store because most have their own transport or can afford to take taxis. These people are likely to enjoy the tranquil surroundings and lack of other shoppers.

Yankin Centre
The Yankin Centre is conveniently placed at the corner of Sayasan Road and Satmhu (1) Street in Yankin township; there are more than 60 shops spread out over its three floors.

Transport to Yankin – much like the Dagon Centre – is excellent and at least 10 bus lines stop nearby, including the No 33, 36, 43, 203, 207 lines that travel from downtown and pass through Yankin township.

The popularity of the centre means prices might be higher compared with department stores like Ga Mone Pwint but there are also restaurants, cafes and a City Mart to lure shoppers.

Ocean super centre
Those living in Yangon’s outer suburbs will no doubt be familiar with the Ocean super centre in Mayangone township. One big plus for the centre is space – shoppers will feel like they are in a warehouse as they wander down the widely spaced aisles.

Prices are relatively low but those who must travel from downtown are likely to have whatever savings are available offset by high transport costs, especially if they must use a taxi.

Public transport is supplied by the No 45, 51 and 97 bus lines and several highway buses too.

The centre specialises in homewares – meaning it is popular with families needing to turn their house into a home. There are also plenty of bedroom accessories like pillows and mattresses available.

Ga Mone Pwint department store
Located near the Dagon Centre in Sanchaung township is the Ga Mone Pwint department store.

Compared with its more fancied competitor, the Ga Mone Pwint store is generally cheaper and certainly lacks the crowds and queues, which means you can get in and get out fast.

The centre is locally recognised as a top spot to find cheap electronics. Unlike most other centres the prices inside Ga Mone Pwint are fixed – so those hoping to haggle and bargain best pay close attention to price tags.

Just like the Dagon Centre, Ga Mone Pwint benefits from the profusion of buses that service the area, although sometimes finding your way into the centre can be tricky, especially if you have to cut through the traffic.

Sein Gay Har super centre
Suburbanites living in townships bordering the Sein Gay Har super centre on Pyay road, Dagon township, should be mindful that there is a big highschool nearby and getting in or out around opening or closing times will be tough.

The centre stocks a large range of knickknacks, clothing, food, accessories and electronic appliances.

Transport feeding the centre is good, with numerous bus lines such as the No 45, 51, 212, 188 passing close-by throughout the day.
