Yangon hotels pitch for water festival business

Not interested in helping people cleanse their sins with a good old-fashioned water soaking? Hotels in Yangon are offering special Thingyan packages to help you escape, the heat, the water and the mayhem this year, writes The Myanmar Times’ travel reporter Zaw Winn.
Parkroyal Hotel has single and double packages available for $58 and $68 respectively.

PEOPLE across the country are preparing for the annual water festival holiday – but for some, it doesn’t involve throwing water. Many will escape the festivities – and the heat – by holing up in a hotel room. To help them bunker down on a budget, many hotels are offering special Thingyan packages.

Daw Win Pa Pa Aung, assistant sales manager of Yangon’s Traders Hotel, says the hotel will be offering special Thingyan room rates from April 10-22.
Room rates, for both singles and doubles, will be just US$55 per night, including buffet breakfast for a maximum of two guests.

The price also includes use of the pool and health club facilities, while clients who stay for three consecutive nights will be entitled to a buffet lunch or Sunday brunch at Traders Café.

Daw Win Pa Pa Aung said the packages are available to locals and foreign residents but not holidaymakers.

“We are just targeting local residents rather than foreign guests at this time of year,” she said.

Traders Hotel packages start at just $55 per night, for both singles and doubles.

Grand Plaza Parkroyal Hotel in Yangon is also offering “Happy Thingyan” packages from April 12 to 21, according to the hotel’s communication executive Daw Thinzar Myat Mon.

She said the package – priced at $58 net per room per night for singles and $68 net per room per night for doubles – is available only to Myanmar nationals and foreign residents. Also included each day is a buffet breakfast at La Brasserie and a Dim Sum lunch at Phoenix Court or La Brasserie. Guests can also choose to have their lunch to take-away.

Chatrium Hotel Yangon (formerly Hotel Nikko Royal Lake) is offering April Escape packages from April 1 to 21, said Daw Lwin Mar Aung, the hotel’s marketing and communication manager.

The package, priced at $129 for a double, includes two nights in a deluxe room with daily breakfast at Emporia Steak House, one complimentary lunch or dinner, unlimited use of the hotel’s swimming pool, gym, sauna and Jacuzzi and a complimentary body care treatment at the Chatrium’s spa.

For those who don’t want to completely shut themselves off from the water-throwing festivities, Sedona Hotel Yangon has both room and pandal packages on offer from April 14 to 16, according to U Wunna Moe Aung, the hotel’s marketing manager.

Located on the eastern bank of Inya Lake, Sedona has its own pandal this year and hotel guests will receive a discount on tickets.

The pandal will open at 9am and close at 5:30pm, with a lunch break slated from noon to 2:30pm. Tickets are priced at $20 for guests and $30 for non-guests, which includes lunch and two coffee breaks.

Sedona’s family-friendly room packages are $50 net for both single and double deluxe rooms. One child can stay for free and each additional child is charged at $20 per day.

Guests will receive a complimentary buffet breakfast and have unlimited access to the hotel’s gym, sauna, jacuzzi and steam.

Sedona Hotel Mandalay, situated beside the famous Mandalay moat – the focus of Thingyan fun in Mandalay – is also offering water festival room packages, said Daw Win Lei, the hotel’s marketing coordinator.

The room rates for locals are K50,000 for superior or deluxe room, K100,000 for a premier suite and K150,000 for a club suite.

The package includes complimentary breakfast, one-hour use of Karaoke lounge, 10pc discount on meals and drinks and an early check-in and late check-out service.
