Heightened security in Mandalay after unrest The police presence in Mandalay has been upped following several days of religious tensions, that resulted in the deaths of two people and saw 13 people injured. The funeral of the Buddhist man killed attracted a procession some thousand people strong, a number of whom carried sticks and crude weapons. A section 144 curfew has been imposed in the city in an attempt to quell any outbreaks of further violence. These pictures from Chief photographer Kaung Htet were taken on July 4, in the wake of the funeral procession.

Mandalay unrest
A mob gathered near a central teashop in Mandalay on the night of July 1, after so far unconfirmed reports spread on social media that two Muslim shop owners had raped a Buddhist woman. The crowd thinned eventually, but several were injured and damage was done to property.
