Eleven Media Group wins international press award

France-based Reporters Without Borders has awarded its annual Best Media Organisation prize to Eleven Media Group, publisher of Weekly Eleven and Bi-Weekly Eleven, reports said last week.

Mr Erik Izraelewicz of French newspaper Le Monde presented the prize to Weekly Eleven chief editor U Wai Phyo and Premier Eleven editor U Myat Htut Win at a ceremony in France on December 7, Bi-Weekly Eleven reported.

Mr Ali Fersat, a cartoonist from Syria, received the prize for Journalist of the Year. Media organisations from Mexico, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Uzbekistan and Sudan had also been nominated for the Best Media Organisation award.

A judging panel of 12 renowned journalists and representatives of human rights groups assessed media groups and journalists from more than 200 countries around the world before selecting the winners, Reporters Without Borders said.

In a speech at the event, U Wai Phyo paid tribute to the “Myanmar citizens who have sacrificed their lives to make changes and improvements in our country possible”, Bi-Weekly Eleven reported.

“I would also like to express thanks to Eleven Media Group’s chief executive officer, Dr Than Htut Aung, for his good leadership, policy and decision-making,” U Wai Phyo was quoted as saying.
