Shwedagon Pagoda’s board of the trustees is inviting entries for competitions organised to mark the 2600th anniversary of the pagoda’s founding, a trustee said.
The board will hold logo, photo, essay writing and painting contests to celebrate the occasion, official U Win Kyaing said.
“Anyone can participate in each of the competitions. Whatever contest they enter, contestant should try and present Shwedagon’s 2600th anniversary, the preservation and propagation of Theravada Buddhism and how Shwedagon is relevant to Buddhists,” said U Win Kyaing.
“We are holding a series of events to mark the anniversary so that it is recorded for posterity and we hope all people will participate,” he said.
“For the logo, contestants should choose a colour and design that is relevant with our religion, and can submit their idea as a painting or graphic design.”
The deadline for the logo contest is 4pm on October 30 and contestants will go in the running for a K1 million prize, he said.
For the photo contest, entrants must cover two themes: The magnificent Shwedagon and 10 Myanmar handicrafts and Shwedagon.
Entry forms with detailed information for the photo contest can be bought for K500 at the board’s office at the pagoda. The deadline for the contest is January 17, 2012. A total of K300,000 in prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place-getters in the photo contest, U Win Kyaing said.
The essay contest will be divided into middle and high school categories, with themes including Shwedagon’s history, activities at the pagoda, sustaining cultural heritage and today at Shwedagon. The painting contest will have the same themes. Organisers will provide more detailed information when the dates for those contests are announced.
