Elderly social pension for 2017/18 to be allocated in June

The government has allocated a budget of K420 million for social pensions for the elderly for the 2017-2018 fiscal year budget. The cash will be handed out to senior citizens within the last two weeks of June, according to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

The budget will be transferred nationwide to the township and quarters’ administrators on June 15 and the administrators will hand them over to seniors from June 16, according to Department of Social Welfare director U Aung Kyaw Moe.

The pension will be given to senior citizens who are 90-years-old and above from April. however it will be handed out to seniors once every three months so the June payment will be the first payment of the year and will cover three months: April, May and June.

There are more than 32000 elders applying for social pensions according to the Department of Social Welfare list. The cash K10,000 per month will be given to the elders.

“Those seniors who are going to reach the applicable age can register before the next budget handout which is in September,” said U Aung Kyaw Moe.

To apply for the social pension, one needs to submit national registration cards and household member lists. The social pension is the first government-sponsored cash transfer programme for the elderly.

The payments have decreased from the K18,000 awarded in 2016, to K10,000 per month through 2018.
