World Bank to open Yangon office

The vice president of the World Bank’s office for East Asia and the Pacific arrived in Myanmar on July 30 to open the bank’s new office in Yangon.

While the World Bank initially announced the office would open in June, Ms Pamela Cox was scheduled to do open the Yangon office on August 1.

During her visit to Myanmar, she will also meet with senior officials and development partners to discuss ways to support of reforms to improve the lives of all the people of Myanmar, especially the poor and vulnerable, a spokesperson said.This is the first visit by World Bank senior management to the country since President U Thein Sein’s government took office in March 2011.

Ms Cox said in a statement in April that the World Bank office will be headed by a new country manager.

Ms Karin Finkelston, the vice president for Asia Pacific of the World Bank’s private sector arm, International Finance Corporation, will also visit Myanmar with Ms Cox.
