Myanmar play Laos today in U-15 girls’ tournament

Myanmar play Laos in the opening match of the 2017 AFF Under-15 Girls’ Championship which kicks off today in Vientiane, capital of the host nation.

Myanmar, or White Angels as the team is fondly called, are drawn in Group A which includes Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia while Philippines, Singapore, Cambodia and Indonesia make up Group B.

It’s a round-robin competition where every team plays every other team in its group, the top two finishers qualifying to the semi-finals, played on a knockout basis, where the team topping Group A takes on second-place finishers in Group B and vice versa.

Also on the cards today is another Group A action featuring Thailand against Vietnam, both regarded as powerhouses of football in Southeast Asia. Group A is therefore tougher of the two groups.

Head coach of Myanmar U-15 team Daw Nu Nu Khine Win said yesterday “We had only two months to prepare for the tournament, because our players were tied up sitting for their annual exams. This team is based on players who played last year. Even though ours is a difficult group, we’ll try our best in every match we play.”

In their second group match scheduled May 10, the White Angels take on Thailand, followed by Vietnam on May 12 and Malaysia on May 16.

The White Angels comprise of players who are mostly students of Sports and Physical Education Department.

The tournament ends May 20.
