Apart from the hosts, Group F includes Australia, Singapore and Brunei with group winner automatically going through. So Myanmar is hoping to finish at least second in order to stand a chance of qualifying to the final-16 round.

The countries have been divided into 10 groups. The group winners will be joined by five best second-place finishers and hosts China in the final round of the competition scheduled next January. Myanmar therefore needs to finish at least second and hope it has a goal difference good enough to make the cut.

Myanmar’s head coach Gerd Zeise was modest about his team’s chances: ‘’The presence of Australia makes things difficult for us, although we still hope to qualify. Instead of thinking in terms of winning the group outright, we will focus on finishing second but with a good goal difference.

“Singapore will be our main rivals and we will need many goals on the score sheet to ensure we end up among the five best second-placed teams. Our team is a bit weak upfront. So I have pickup two new strikers,” Zeise added.

Being hosts gives Myanmar home advantage and besides, the players have been in training for a while preparing for the 29th SEA Games in Malaysia next month. The U-23 squad features many players who were part of Myanmar’s U-20 World Cup side two years ago.

Myanmar will face Singapore in their opening match on July 19, followed by Brunei on July 21 and Australia on July 23.
