Releasing the secrets of Underground String

By Zo Puii

GUITARISTS looking to learn the secrets of great guitar playing will be relieved to know that one of Myanmar’s top music-ians has let it all slip.

Lazy Club band member Naing Zaw has released a guitar study guide to accompany his second instru-mental solo album, Underground String (Myay Auk Kah Kyo).

Naing Zaw said he decided to print the book, titled The Secrets of Underground String and published by Nagar Publishing House, after he received an overwhelming number of letters asking him to send material on how to play certain chords from the album.

“A lot of people wrote to me to express problems they were having with some of the notes in my songs, so I thought this book might help them with that,” he said.

The lead guitarist has produced one other solo album Pray in the Age of Science (Theikpan Khit Yeh Tha Kaung), which was released two years ago.

“After working as a guitarist for so many years, I had to ask myself, ‘Am I satisfied?’ I realised that I didn’t want to retire without doing something bigger. That’s when I decided to go solo.”

The book includes detailed notes on how to play the 10 songs featured on Underground String and essays the musician has written himself on music and guitar playing.

“I couldn’t contact everyone and I was looking for a way to share my thoughts on music. This was a good way to do both,” said Naing Zaw. “There are plenty of guitar players around, but very few instrumental albums. I hope this inspires people.

“It will be a good foundation for those starting out and a guide for those who already play.”

The book has been available since February 3 and can be found in bookstores nationwide. Underground String was released early last year.

Naing Zaw said he planned to continue making solo albums in the future.
