HIGER than usual sea temperatures in late 2006 resulted in the death of thousands of oysters being farmed in the Andaman Sea, sources from the Myanmar pearling industry said.

 

BUSINESSES in the fishery sector are scrambling to develop a plan to meet a dramatically increased export target for the 2007-08 financial year after the government revised its initial target up 25 percent to US$750 million.

 

INSPECTOR of Police Kyaw Mya Than and party from Nyaungdon police station on March 20 searched house No 185, Setkyee Street in Ward No.5, Nyaungdon Township and seized 65 foreign compac discs produced without any licence and 56 Myanmar pirated CDs.

 
THE state-run Myanma Gems Enterprise (MGE) will award more than 300 new jade exploration blocks to private businesses in the next three months to boost national production and earn more foreign currency, an MGE official said on April 30.

A SPECIAL trade mission from South Korea will visit Yangon this week in an attempt to enhance trade between the two countries, the local Voice journal reported on May 2.

 

FORMER Thai foreign minister Surakiart Sathirathai, a key member of deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s Thai Rak Thai Party, told Thailand’s Assets Examination Committee (AEC) on April 30 the former premier gave an order to lend four billion baht to the Myanmar government in spite of his objections, The Nation newspaper reported, citing an unidentified source.

 

PRIVATE construction companies have taken heed of a warning to get to work on projects being built on government land or have them confiscated, with work starting again on many of Yangon’s delayed projects, a senior housing official said last week.
