Five minutes with singer Khin Phone

By May Thaw

Q: What have you been listening to lately?
A: I’m loving an American group called Flyleaf. It isn’t that in-your-face Evanescence kind of music that seems to be so popular right now. Locally, I really like A Nge’s latest album, Origin (Zit Myit).

Q: I heard a rumour you were dating someone. Is it true?
A: That is definitely just a rumour! One that I haven’t heard until now.

Q: What do you look for in a man?
A: Someone who understands me and who is willing to put up with my hectic lifestyle.

Q: How would you describe your sense of style?
A: These days, I would have to say gothic.

Q: Some Myanmar singers are being criticised for reproducing foreign music and calling it their own. Have you been accused of this?
A: Not yet, but I am aware of the different types of music that are popular in a lot of foreign countries and I have to admit, I do use them for inspiration. I search for foreign music on the internet and compare it to my own.

Q: When will your first album, I Am Fine (Nay Kaung Par Tae), be released?
A: As soon as possible. Everything is ready. We just have to make a few minor adjustments.

Q: Do you have a favourite song on the album?
A: No, I like them all, but the song I released on the compilation album Angel, “You Will Suffer The Consequences” (Wut lel Mel), will always be my favourite.

Q: Why?
A; I love the lyrics. I get this amazing feeling when I sing it. I don’t know why.

Q: And I heard you have already started working on a second album?
A: Absolutely! I will be writing a few of the songs for the second album so it will take a bit longer to make than the first one.

Q: What do you like to do when you’re not working?
A: I play guitar, watch TV – usually a music channel like Channel V - and I meditate in the evenings.

Q: Would you act in a movie if somebody offered you a role?
A: No. I have been offered a role in a Myanmar film before but I said no. I’m not interested in acting.

Q: People often say you look like Korean actress Bae Doona. How do you feel about that?
A: It makes me more uncomfortable than anything. I have watched her on TV for years and she’s a great actress. I guess I’m a little intimidated!

Q: Do you have any shows coming up?
A: I don’t have any plans to hold a show over the next few months because of monsoon, so maybe after August.

Q: Are you satisfied with where your life is heading right now?
A: To me, having the chance to sing and make a living out of it makes me as happy as I can be.

Q: Do you have any regrets?
A: No. I don’t like to dwell on the past. I’m always looking ahead and thinking about what’s next. There’s not much you can do about regrets so why have them?
