THE SUN SHINES OVER MINGUN LAST WEEK even as rainy season tightens its grip on Myanmar. Mingun Pahtodawgyi, with its huge cracks caused by an 1838 earthquake, continues to attract local and foreign visitors, most of whom arrive by way of an 11-kilometre boat trip from Mandalay on the Ayeyarwady River. Boats leaving from the city’s Mayangyan Jetty usually take about 45 minutes to reach the temple. Each day an average of five vessels make the return trip. Private boats cost K30,000 to K50,000 depending on their size.
