The ceremony marks the assassinations of Gen Aung San, six ministers, a government secretary and a bodyguard, who were gunned down during a cabinet meeting at the Government Secretariat on Theinbyu Road in downtown Yangon. At the time of his death, Gen Aung San was serving as deputy chairman of an executive council overseeing Myanmar’s transition to independence from Britain, which came six months later.

 
The session of the National Convention, being attended by 1058 delegates, was opened by the Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council, Lieutenant General Thein Sein, at the government-owned Nyaunghnapin camp at Hmawbi, north of Yangon.
 

In an email to The Myanmar Times, he said a committee formed in January was expected to present the first draft of the charter – aimed at transforming ASEAN into a rule-based community by 2015 – to the meeting on July 30.

 

“We had announced certain criteria for restaurants to be included on the list. After examining the shops according to these criteria we chose the top 13,” he said.

“BIMSTEC emerged as the result of the Look West policy by Thailand to expand economic and trade relations with South Asia and the Look East policy by the countries in the Indian subcontinent to foster closer economic ties with Southeast Asia,” ........
 

BANDOOLA Transportation Service, operator of Parami bus lines in Yangon, has announced plans to introduce a new route between its South Okkalapa terminal and downtown, offering commuters a higher level of comfort.

 
The program, launched at Yangon’s Parkroyal Hotel on July 18, is part of a project involving five countries in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. Apart from Myanmar, they are Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.

THE United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will expand its prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission project to a total of 50 townships throughout Myanmar by 2010, said a senior official from the organisation.

 

“I publish books in Singapore and Thailand so I can use the ISBN in those countries,” said U Myo Aung, the managing director of Pyi Sone Publishing. He then imports the books back to Myanmar to sell on the domestic market.

 

MEDICAL officials met at a workshop earlier this month at the Yangon headquarters of National Tuberculosis Program to finalise plans for a comprehensive range of activities to combat the disease.

 

“The four-day, three-night tour included the flight between Yangon to Bangkok, as well as transportation between Bangkok and Pattaya,” said Ma Su from Air Bagan. “The tour also included visits to major sites in Bangkok like the Grand Palace, Emerald Pagoda and Erawan Shrine.”
