LESS than half of fisheries factories in Yangon want to participate in a government plan to give them exclusive power supplies that are designed to help the industry maintain production over the dry summer months when blackouts are common, according to the Myanmar Fishery Federation.

 

CHINA’S misfortunes are proving to be Myanmar’s gains, as sesame seed traders in Mandalay last week reported a surge in demand following a string of disasters that have hit China’s grain production.

 

“If the market is flooded, it’s likely the price for eel will decrease,” he said. The current floor price for eel at Muse’s state-run auction house is US$2000 per tonne.

THE Myanmar Medical Association is planning to offer courses later this year to provide life skills training and health education to young people at Taungoo in Bago Division and Pathein in Ayeyarwady Division.

 

Bangladesh has zeroed in on Sonadia Island in the Bay of Bengal to develop its first deep-sea port, which, if given the green light, will be in direct competition with a Myanmar deep-sea port planned for Maday Island in Rakhine State.

 

“When I was young, landscaping was very rare in Myanmar and most people weren’t familiar with what it entailed. But after 1989, when construction began picking up again, the YCDC (Yangon City Development Committee) helped spread the idea of landscaping through a number of parks and gardens across the city,”

 

“We charge US$14 to $15 per square metre on a monthly basis for the ground floor to 12. “But we will charge a little bit more for the extended 13 to 19 floors, which will be $16 to $19 per square metre,”

A YOUNG FARMER REAPS SUMMER PADDY at her farm near the village of Gwekyikone in Patheingyi township, Mandalay Division, last week. According to U Aung Kyin, the Mandalay divisional manager of Myanma Agriculture Service under the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, summer paddy is being cultivated on 240,000 acres in Mandalay Division this season. About 60 percent of this had been reaped by last week, producing an average of nearly 100 baskets an acre. The department is aiming for a total of 23 million baskets throughout the division for the summer season, about the same as last year.
