New computers for UMFCCI classes

DONATIONS of computers from South Korea and Japan are a welcome boost to training programs offered by the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI), an official from the federation said. South Korea’s Chonnam University donated 100 computers in late July while the Japanese Overseas Development Cooperation (JODC) group gave the UMFCCI another 50 computers in the same week, the federation’s chairman, U Win Myint, said. The UMFCCI began providing training courses in 2000 to staff from trade associations under the federation and now offers classes covering accountancy, management, administration, international trading regulations, and business language skills in English, Japanese and Korean.U Win Myint said that as Myanmar’s international trade grows, there is urgent need to upskill. UMFCCI general secretary U Sein Win Hlaing added: “Our staff still need to know more about economic concepts and international commercial procedures. They need to know more about trading and administrative management.” Nearly 1700 certificates had been issued to graduates of the federation’s courses over the past seven years. – Htin Kyaw

Businessmen picked for Japan meeting

MYANMAR will send two representatives to a business meeting between ASEAN-member countries and Japan to be held in Tokyo later this year. U Win Aung, chairman of Dagon International Limited, and U Soe Myint, a director of FMI Group of Companies, were chosen last month during a preparatory get-together in Yangon for the coming 33rd ASEAN-Japan Business Meeting from October 31 to November 2. The meeting in the Japanese capital aims to enhance regional cooperation and will focus on three areas: coping with energy and environmental issues; the improvement of physical distribution systems and logistics systems; and human resource development, including movement of people between Southeast Asian countries and Japan. The president of the Asian Development Bank, Haruhiko Kuroda, has been invited as a guest speaker. ASEAN groups Myanmar, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
