New computers for UMFCCI classes
DONATIONS of computers from South Korea and Japan are a welcome
boost to training programs offered by the Union of Myanmar Federation
of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI), an official from
the federation said. South Korea’s Chonnam University donated
100 computers in late July while the Japanese Overseas Development
Cooperation (JODC) group gave the UMFCCI another 50 computers
in the same week, the federation’s chairman, U Win Myint,
said. The UMFCCI began providing training courses in 2000 to staff
from trade associations under the federation and now offers classes
covering accountancy, management, administration, international
trading regulations, and business language skills in English,
Japanese and Korean.U Win Myint said that as Myanmar’s international
trade grows, there is urgent need to upskill. UMFCCI general secretary
U Sein Win Hlaing added: “Our staff still need to know more
about economic concepts and international commercial procedures.
They need to know more about trading and administrative management.”
Nearly 1700 certificates had been issued to graduates of the federation’s

Businessmen picked for Japan meeting
MYANMAR will send two representatives to a business meeting between
ASEAN-member countries and Japan to be held in Tokyo later this
year. U Win Aung, chairman of Dagon International Limited, and
U Soe Myint, a director of FMI Group of Companies, were chosen
last month during a preparatory get-together in Yangon for the
coming 33rd ASEAN-Japan Business Meeting from October 31 to November
2. The meeting in the Japanese capital aims to enhance regional
cooperation and will focus on three areas: coping with energy
and environmental issues; the improvement of physical distribution
systems and logistics systems; and human resource development,
including movement of people between Southeast Asian countries
and Japan. The president of the Asian Development Bank, Haruhiko
Kuroda, has been invited as a guest speaker. ASEAN groups Myanmar,
Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines,
Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
