YANGON vehicles that run on compressed natural gas (CNG) will
be allowed to buy gas only after they get a monthly infringement
clearance record from the Yangon Division Wireless and Traffic
Police Force, a private taxi driver said last week.
“The program starts this month,” said the driver.
Drivers must get the clearance record at the office of the Yangon
Division Wireless and Traffic Police Force. If they have broken
a traffic rule, they can get the record only after they have paid
the fine.
Drivers of CNG vehicles have been issued cards printed with
a table to track infringement clearances. The card reads, “Vehicles
that do not get a record until the end of the month will not be
allowed to buy gas.”
The purpose of the program is to keep track of traffic violations
by drivers of CNG cars, which can buy fuel at any CNG station.
This differs from vehicles that run on petrol or diesel, which
must buy fuel at their designated station, making it much easier
for police to keep track of drivers who owe fines for traffic
violations.
Up to July there were about 13,500 CNG vehicles in Yangon.
