THE Strand Hotel in downtown Yangon has been named one of the
world’s best hotels in the August issue of Travel and Leisure
magazine, which is published in New York.
Each year the magazine publishes a list of the best hotels in
the world as determined by its readers. On the 2007 list, the
Strand Hotel is ranked eighth out of 50 hotels in Asia and 34th
out of 100 hotels around the world.
“We are extremely proud of our achievements at the Strand,”
said Mr Sukhdeep Singh, the general manager of the hotel.
“It is an honour to be ranked among the world’s
best hotels, particularly by individual travellers whose positive
comments about our hotel have made this recognition possible.
It is a tribute to how the staff works closely with guests to
address their every need,” he said.
The Strand Hotel, built by British entrepreneur John Darwood,
was opened in 1901. It is now managed by the Singapore-based General
Hotel Management.
The No.1 hotel on the Travel and Leisure list this year was the
Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur, India. Second place was South Africa’s
Singita Sabi Sand resort in Kruger National Park, while the Oriental
in Bangkok took third.
