THE Myanmar Engineering Society (MES) will soon offer a bore
pile technology course in cooperation with the Public Works Department
under the Ministry of Construction, said an official from the
society.
“We are currently in discussion about the course with
the Public Works Department,” said U Han Zaw, the vice president
of the society. “We expect to offer the course this month
or next month.”
“The course will focus on the design and construction
of bore pile foundations and the problems experienced in actual
work environments,” he said.
Bore pile technology is used in Myanmar to build deep foundations
in bridge construction projects.
U Han Zaw said the Japan International Cooperation Agency introduced
bore pile technology to Myanmar during a modern bridge technology
course in 1986 and helped build Thaketa Bridge in Yangon in cooperation
with the Public Works Department later that year.
“Nawaday Bridge in Pyay was opened in 1997 and was the
first river-crossing bridge in Myanmar to be built using bore
pile technology,” he said.
“Before bore pile technology, we used well-shaped foundations.
It takes four to six months to build a well-shaped foundation
but only two months to build a foundation using bore pile technology.”
The Myanmar Engineering Society frequently holds seminars and
courses at its headquarters on the Hlaing University campus in
Yangon with the aim of promoting efficient engineering in Myanmar.
