THE Myanma Port Authority (MPA) is expected to announce in coming
days who has won the contract to carry out the second phase of
upgrades at Bo Aung Kyaw Wharf, according to a developer who is
seeking the contract for the work.
The upgrading of the Yangon River port, which has three wharves,
will allow it to handle more containers.
“The multimillion-dollar project includes the installation
of a 40-tonne moveable portal crane and construction of a concrete
platform 11 metres wide and 21.5 metres long. It is expected be
completed by the end of next year,” a project director for
Dawn Construction Co., Ltd told The Myanmar Times on condition
of anonymity.
Dawn Construction has since 1996 developed several port facilities,
including wharfs and jetties, that are operated by the Ministry
of Transport.
Three other companies are also hoping for the contract to carry
out the second phase of the Bo Aung Kyaw Wharf upgrade, the Dawn
Construction official added.
He said the MPA, a division of the Ministry of Transport which
had invited project proposals from developers in late June, was
expected to announce the contract winner before mid-September.
Meanwhile, sources close to the MPA said Beijing-based China
Harbour Engineering Co. had won the contract despite there being
no formal announcement from port authorities.
Asia World Co., Ltd is another of the firms believed to bidding
for the contract.
The first phase of the upgrade project was completed in 1997 and
involved installing a portal crane similar to that being added
during the second phase.
Once both cranes are in operation, Bo Aung Kyaw Wharf will be
able to load or unload two 12,000-tonne container vessels at the
same time.
