Five minutes with Plan B's Brian Jeremiah

By May Oo Moe

Q: How long have you been working in the modelling industry?
A: Eighteen years.

Q: Why did you choose to set up a modelling business in Myanmar?
A: Myanmar people have an exotic look. I especially like the Shan, Mon and Rahkine tribes. Even the men are very attractive, sometimes more so than the women. But there are problems — women face pressure to adhere to traditional standards of dress and when it comes to international standards, they do not have the confidence to fit in.

Q: How does the modelling industry in Singapore compare to Myanmar?
A: Singapore is limited in terms of what it has to offer, whereas Myanmar has a much larger population with a lot of talent yet to be discovered.

Q: What is your greatest fear in life?
A: Not knowing what is going to happen in the future.

Q: What was your most memorable experience?
A: When my parents passed away. I was in Myanmar.

Q: Where is your favourite place to travel in Myanmar?
A: I like Kalaw because I am inspired by its beauty and serenity. And also Ngwe Saung beach. I love that place.

Q: What is your life motto?
A: There is no such thing as an ugly person, only people who do not know how to make the most of themselves.

Q: What do you value most in friends?
A: It’s very easy to find friends, but hard to find a true one. A true friend is someone you can confide in. I’m lucky because I have friends like that.

Q: Do you have any regrets in life?
A: I don’t know what regret is. Before coming here I had three options: Malaysia, Vietnam or Myanmar. I chose Myanmar in the hope that I wouldn’t regret it and so far, I don’t.

Q: What are your business strategies when it comes to dealing with competitors?
A: First — to move ahead, second — never pay attention to what they are doing and third — be original. You can tell the difference between the real competition and the posers.

Q: What makes you happy in Myanmar?
A: Myanmar keeps me stress-free. It also keeps me young and keeps my weight down, because only in Myanmar can I afford my own personal trainer.

Q: How about the food?
A: It took me a year to get used to eating bamboo, fish paste and the famous balachaung. Now Myanmar food is one of my favourite cuisines. My favourite restaurant is Danu Phyu Daw Saw Ye, where you can get the best Myanmar food in town.
