Ear plugs a must at Signature Garden Bistro

By Hayley Barnett
One thing's for sure – Signature Garden Bistro lays claim to the perfect spot. Pic: Hayley Barnett

FOR a quiet, relaxing drink overlooking the lake, don’t go to Signature Garden Bistro.

The scenery is great, the food’s not too bad and neither are the prices, but unless you like to eat to the sounds of a clanging keyboard and off-key singers at full volume, who have quite possibly stepped out of a time capsule from the 1980s, I wouldn’t recommend it.

To be fair, Pho Cley band has its moments. They tried their darnedest to entertain with a variety of interesting sound effects — but at the expense of diners’ ear drums.

Apart from the background noise, the garden bistro would make a classy yet casual hangout if you’re craving good old American-style cuisine. The fries are actually fries and the burgers, though small, are about as tasty as they come in Yangon. You get both for the reasonable price of US$4.

The club sandwich was also a good pick. It also comes with fries and is value for money at $4, with as much food as possible squeezed between three slices of toasted bread.

The chocolate mousse was an experience. It was hard to figure out whether it was frozen mousse or a slab of soft chocolate, but the taste was sensational and that’s all that matters when it comes to chocolate.

One of the first things I noticed about the staff was their unusual choice of footwear. The Converse One Stars, or “Chucks” as they are more commonly known in the West, are actually part of their uniform. Slightly strange in a bar adorned with antique fans and teak seating.

Like most restaurants in Myanmar, the bistro was overstaffed and the staff themselves hard to catch, but they were friendly and efficient once you had their attention.

Overall, Signature Garden Bistro offers great food at an equally great price, as well as a magnificent view of Kandawgyi Lake, but on arrival, you might find it best to ask the band to tone it down and lose the sound effects.
