DELUGE IN YANGON: Pedestrians walk in a heavy downpour in downtown Yangon last week, which brought 12.7 centimetres (5.0 inches) of rain to the city on Friday, according to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology. An official from the department said last week’s rain was caused by a storm in the South China Sea. “A storm in the South China Sea and a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal combined the cause of rain in the area around Yangon,” U Tun Lwin, the director general of the department, told The Myanmar Times on September 21. “We can refer to this rainfall as ‘monsoonish’ because the monsoon has been strong this year and the storm has helped it revive a little,” he said. He said monsoon had already departed from upper and central Myanmar, where rainfall amounts have decreased significantly in recent weeks, and would leave the rest of the country by the end of the month.
