“Although we put more than 100,000 pearls up for auction (in 2006-07), only a few hundred were left unsold. That tells us that our pearls are attractive to international pearl traders,”

“United Overseas Bank and the Development Bank of Singapore are the main banks Myanmar traders rely on for transactions,” the chairman of one of Myanmar’s leading international trading companies said on condition of anonymity.

TWO executives from German industrial giant Robert Bosch GmbH visited Myanmar last month to discuss ways to expand the market for their products here, a senior official with the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) said last week.

“Orders have increased by 20pc compared with last rainy season. From the start of August up until October 10 we made 120 dehumidifiers. We hope to reach 200 by the end of October,”

“We are planning to establish the centre with the aim of protecting Myanmar crab traders and ensuring them financial security,” the association’s chairman, U Hnin Oo, said at a weekly livestock and fisheries meeting in Yangon.

“In mid October last year, special-quality black gram cost K1.1 million per tonne, which was a record for the market because demand was so high. But prices and demand this year are looking very different,”

CONSTRUCTION companies are planning a series of promotions in Yangon for later this month to mark the return to the property market of people who have observed the tradition of staying put during Buddhist Lent.

“Custom-made furniture is becoming more popular because people are beginning to realise that this is an option available to them. In the past, people wanted to get things specially made but there was no one to do it for them,”

“We have been inspecting rivers since last month to check if sand producers operating along them have approval from the department or not. If they are found to be without a licence, we warn them and ask them to apply for one as this is the educating period,”

HOUSE OF THE WEEK
There is little privacy out back of the three-bedroom house, where a neighbouring block of flats towers over the fully-paved backyard, though a six-foot fence with razor wire running along the front of the property keeps the neatly trimmed lawn out of sight and securely away from passers-by on the street.

“welcomes the Government of Myanmar’s public commitment to work with the United Nations and the appointment of a liaison officer with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi”.

Gen Soe Win, who sat on a series of Tatmadaw committees, was credited with having personally overseen the successful completion of hydroelectric dam, railway and road projects and was respected by his peers for his ability to put plans into action.

“There are no restrictions or special instructions for the issuance of visas,” the official told The Myanmar Times. “Tourist and business visas are being issued as usual at Myanmar embassies and consulates all over the world.”

“Entrepreneurs who own fish and shrimp farms in flood-affected regions have their doubts about whether those areas can support such businesses in the future,” said U Han Tun, the vice chairman of MFF.

“Girls are more fashion conscious these days and they are becoming more daring, trying different foreign styles like stilettos in bright colours as well as chunkier styles like the wedge.”

“I am also making this is because I want the world to know that this tradition comes from a Myanmar tribe, not our neighbouring country Thailand, which claims that the Padaung is a Thai tribe.”
