BRING IT: Myanmar “pencak silak” practitioners train at the Myanmar Thaing Federation’s gymnasium in Yangon. Five Myanmar martial artists will this week head to Malaysia for the 13th Pencak Silak World Cup from October 19 to 26. The fighters, part of a delegation from the Myanmar Thaing Federation, will be joined by Myanmar referee Daw Yupar Thein, who is to officiate at the traditional Malaysian martial art competition in Kuala Lumpur. While this is Myanmar’s first Pencak Silak World Cup, Myanmar competitors have entered in the sport at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games since 1993, winning a total of four silver medals and 16 bronze. Malaysia usually win gold. Coach U Hla Myaing has been training the Myanmar team for six hours a day in preparation for the World Cup.

MYANMAR football fans and local analysts say they are realistic about the national team’s chances of defeating China on October 21 but expect the encounter against one of Asia’s top teams to provide valuable experience.

 

A MYANMAR rowing team set off from Yangon on Saturday for the 12th Asian Rowing Championship in Chung Ju, South Korea, from October 16 to 19.
