Mr Gambari, the special envoy on Myanmar of UN Secretary General Mr Ban Ki-moon, said the tour’s objectives include seeking support for promoting a dialogue in Myanmar aimed accelerating a democratic transition. Another objective is to discuss how the UN can help alleviate political and economic challenges facing Myanmar.

 

The appointment of the commission follows the completion last month of the National Convention, which adopted guidelines for the constitution. The guidelines, or principles, included a recommendation to establish a multiparty democratic system with executive power held by an elected president.

 
Officials from Myanmar’s two state-run internet service providers (ISP) Myanmar Posts and Telecommunication (MPT) and Myanmar Teleport confirmed that partial service had been restored on October 9 while full access returned last Sunday.
 
Deputy foreign minister U Kyaw Thu attended a meeting of the foreign ministries of the two countries in Beijing on October 11, which was also attended by U Kyaw Thu’s Chinese counterpart, Mr Wu Dawei.
HONG KONG Express Airways will launch direct service between Hong Kong and Yangon on November 2, a spokesperson from the airline’s authorised ticket agent in Yangon said last week.
 
The 18-member delegation – consisting of two media representatives from each of the nine ASEAN countries aside from Myanmar – will visit under the arrangement of the ASEAN Journalist Program Phase IV (2006-2007).
 

ALTHOUGH Bangladesh has said it would try to entice international airlines to add Dhaka to their list of destinations through an “open skies” initiative starting this month, carriers in Myanmar said they had no immediate plans to start flying there.

 

“We will start the season with a tour to Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda (in Mon State) on October 19 and another to Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival at Inle Lake (in Shan State) on October 25,” said U Kyi Win, the manager of Sein Win and Associates Travel and Tours.

 

“We have a lot of clients from China, (South) Korea, Japan and Singapore, as well as some from Europe and the US. French merchants are the top buyer among Westerners while Japanese are biggest buyers from Asia,” ...

 

“The project is 80 percent complete and 138 shops have been built out of 200 that will be there,” he said. Sunday Mart, a youth-oriented clothing and accessories chain, is the second shop to open at Thiriyatanar, following the launch of the Ko Ko beauty salon.

 

“Few of our businesses are enjoying the preferential trade arrangements offered through AFTA by the more developed ASEAN members,” said U Maung Maung Yi, a former director general of the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration who retired in late 2006.

 

“It seems more complicated and unique but I think what really makes the shows stand out is that they use performers in the shows as puppets, which is nice,”

 

Nevertheless she visits the gym regularly to practice weight training in order to beef up her slight arms and thighs, much to the distress of her mother, who favours a more traditional look.

 

“Our main rivals are definitely going to be Thailand and I’m sure they will be working hard to give their best performance seeing as this is one of their traditional sports and we beat them in Manila,” ...
