THIS heavy-duty home with A-frame overtones is probably better
suited to Scandinavian winters than the heat and humidity of Yangon,
with steep roofing ideal for easing down piles of snow and thick
red brick walls that keep occupants sealed off from the weather
outside.
Still, its rustic charm and pleasant aesthetics make this four-bedroom
residence a welcome addition to the omnipresent pillars and white-washed
walls of Bahan township – even if it doesn’t have
a single balcony.
Built in 2005 on a 4500-square-foot compound, there is plenty
of room indoors and out for a family with adult children.
The ground floor comprises a garage and a large open area reminiscent
of a log cabin, which has been partitioned into a kitchen as well
as dining and living space.
The house makes heavy use of wood, with its polished floorboards,
thick overhead beams and knotted branches – used imaginatively
as trim indoors and railing outside – creating a cosy and
creative atmosphere.
The building’s design, however, means parts of the ground
floor can be a little dark without electric lighting and a pair
of French doors would make a welcome addition to let a little
breeze in.
The kitchen is bright and airy enough though, and connects with
the garage as well as with a room and toilet intended for a housekeeper.
The first floor has three bedrooms, including one master bedroom
with a TV viewing area and separate bathroom. The two single bedrooms
share a bathroom.
The top floor desperately needs air conditioners for its three
rooms – a bedroom, altar room and guest room, which could
serve as a second living room.
The house comes with four air conditioners. Furniture can be
included upon negotiation.
