THE privately run Naung Lon Foreign Education Centre (NLFE) will
start offering scholarships next year to help underprivileged
students study abroad.
“Our program is aimed at helping poor students get an international-level
education,” said U Pe Nyunt, the principal of centre headquartered
in MGW Tower in Botahtaung township, Yangon.
He said the centre will select 10 students a year based on their
background information, including family income, matriculation
exam scores and political affiliation.
He said the scholarship program was being conducted with support
from an oil company that wished to remain unnamed but that has
recently discovered gas in upper Myanmar.
The chosen students will be provided with support to attend
a one-year diploma course in Singapore.
To be eligible for the scholarship, students must take one year
of English-language training at the centre for a fee of K300,000,
including examination fees for Test of English Language as Foreign
Language (TOEFL) and International English Language Testing System
(IELTS).
Students who take the training but do not receive scholarships
will be helped by the centre in their efforts to find other scholarships
and suitable programs for overseas study.
