The appointment of Lt Gen Thein Sein, who has been serving an acting prime minister since May, was announced in a declaration signed by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe on October 24.

On October 9 U Maung Maung Oo underwent an operation at New Yangon General Hospital to have a kidney removed and transplanted to his 43-year-old sister Daw Swe Swe Oo, who has suffered from kidney problems since 1996 and has undergone dialysis treatments for the past year and a half.

“I hope this process produces concrete results for the benefit of the people of Myanmar and also to improve the relationship between the government of Myanmar and the international community,”

A FORMER winner of Myanmar’s National Literary Award has become one of five authors shortlisted for the inaugural Man Asian Literary Prize for unpublished works in the English Language.
 
THE government plans to install two new power transmission lines from local substations to suburban areas of Yangon by the end of the year to reduce reliance on the national power grid, an official from the Yangon City Electricity Supply Board (YESB) said earlier this month.
 
AN Export Promotion Information Centre established by the Ministry of Commerce in Taungoo, Bago Division, has had a tough time achieving its goal of encouraging local merchants to export their products, said an official from the centre.
 
“The new branch will be different from the main shop because it will offer more imported fancy designs for young female customers and simple fashionable clothes for women,”
 

“If people would abide by the regulations for dumping set by the department, the city would be cleaner. We need people to cooperate and follow the rules to help clean up Yangon,” the official said.

 

“For example, some farmland in Shan State is located on hills and it can be very difficult to get water from valleys to the hilltops,” U Hla Tun said. “Our foot pumps help farmers get water into these areas.”

 

THE Department of Management Studies at the Yangon Institute of Economics has unveiled plans to launch the country’s first online Master of Business Administration program later this year.

 

YANGON Airways has made several adjustments to its flight schedule through October 31, including changing the departure time of the daily Yangon-Nyaung Oo-Mandalay-Heho-Yangon flight to 6:30am. It arrives back in Yangon after completing the route at 10:45am....

 

THE Myanmar Medical Association has announced that an emergency management training course organised as part of its continuing medical education program will resume on November 3.

 

“When there is understanding among staff most problems get solved automatically. But some managers think competition is more efficient than cooperation so they undermine understanding by creating a competitive atmosphere,”

 

“We’ve held the courses in nearly all townships in Yangon Division since 1996 in collaboration with local non-government organisa-tions to teach housewives how to use vegetables, plants and spices as medicines in emergency cases,”

 

THE Chemical Industry Group under the Myanmar Industries Association will send two of its members to Japan at the end of this month to attend a course on the Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).

 

“This control system allows us to see how repairs can be made in the shortest possible time when the trains are delayed for any reason,” he said, adding that the line’s punctuality record has improved since the checkpoints were established in August.

THERE is likely to be little demand from Myanmar companies for the new .asia domain name despite expectations that individuals and firms in the region will snap up new website addresses when the suffix is made available to the public next February, Yangon-based IT sources said.

The pagoda’s board of trustees has reported that the value of gold leaf donated to the pagoda by well-wishers in the past nine months totaled K650 million, an increase of K120 million over the same period last year. The board also said that more than 23 viss (82.8 pounds) of gold dust have accumulated from leftover gold leaf papers in the past few years. MYANMAR learned a painful yet valuable lesson from their first encounter with China which should better prepare the squad for the coming Southeast Asian Games, coach Marcos Falopa said last week.

 

“This is the highest achievement we’ve had in the 17 years the Myanmar Rowing and Canoeing Federation has been established,” federation secretary general U Pe Win said after the eight-member team returned from the October 16-19 championships in Chung-Ju.
