“During the lead-up to the 100th anniversary celebration of the zoo, we trained a number of the tiger cubs so that people could hold them and pose for photographs,”....

“Let us start having a new spirit, a new movement, a new strength and we will succeed, believe me. This is a beginning of a successful process … something is moving.”

“Up until now there was no direct flight between Yangon and Hong Kong so passengers had to fly to Bangkok or Singapore and then transfer to a Hong Kong flight. It was a waste of time and money,”

“We tried to establish contact with the ship but we failed to get any response, so we than contacted coalition warships in the area,”

“We are very proud to win these prizes,” Ko Myo Min Oo told The Myanmar Times in Nanning. “We spent months designing the pavilion for the expo and now our efforts have been recognised. We are really happy for that.”

However, the highlight of the festival occurs only after darkness falls and locals launch hundreds of lit candles onto the water “The festival has become more popular since the Sittaung Bridge connecting Shwe Kyin and Madauk was opened in February 2003,” said U Soe Yi, an official from the local information department.

The passengers, hailing from a range of countries including Spain, Canada and Russia, were treated to a traditional Myanmar dance performance on the cruise ship on their first night before being given the choice of a trip to Bagan, a trip to Mandalay, or sightseeing in Yangon, the spokesperson said.

“We will also provide performing arts courses – including singing, dancing and playing musical instruments – for 120 boys every Saturday and Sunday starting in November with support from the United Nations Children’s Fund,”

Once the association is formed, it will hold weekly meetings to discuss the market situation and factors that are likely to affect production or consumption. An emergency fund would be established for the association to draw on in times of need.

“To start, a free clinic named Phyo Cetana will open in our industrial zone. The workers don’t need to pay consultancy fees or other expenses for a medical check-up, including the cost of pharmaceuticals,”

“Environmentally it’s definitely better than palm oil because you can plant it on dry soil and barren areas and it will do well. But the problem is you need a vast area to produce a substantial amount of oil because the yield of jatropha oil per hectare is far, far, far smaller than the yield from palm oil,”

The quattro stagioni, while good, was too vinegary for my taste. The spaghetti, covered in a delicious chunky tomato sauce, was excellent but it is obviously the pizza that lures the crowds.

“Here I don’t know what they’re feeding me, even though I pay US$1500 every semester. Until now I didn’t like their food at all and I can’t believe that people can fill their stomachs with one small bucket of fried chicken and a cup of coffee,”

U Naw Thaung said the events Myanmar had the best potential to win golds in this year are rowing, canoeing and kayaking, track and field, archery, shooting, judo and sepaktakraw.

“According to the rules of Muay Thai, it’s more of a technical fight in which it is important to score points. So Myanmar kickboxers need to be clever when they fight because they’re used to fights that rely heavily on endurance.”

ELE-PHANTASTIC: Costumed dancers perform at the annual Elephant Dance Competition in Kyaukse, a few miles south of Mandalay, on October 25. During the two-day event, 19 teams wearing colourful elephant costumes made of paper and cloth on bamboo frames performed dances to the accompaniment of traditional music at the foot of Shwe Tha Lyaung and Kha Shwe Taung mountains. The performers must maintain perfect rhythm and timing to stay synchronised with one another inside the costume. The traditional event has been held in October every year for nearly 1000 years.
