“During the lead-up to the 100th anniversary celebration

people could hold them and pose for photographs,”....

 “Up
until now there was no direct flight between
Yangon and Hong Kong so passengers had
to fly to Bangkok or Singapore and then
transfer to a Hong Kong flight. It was
a waste of time and money,” |

 “We
are very proud to win these prizes,” Ko Myo Min

months designing the pavilion for the expo and now our

that.” |

However,
the highlight of the festival occurs only after darkness
falls and locals launch hundreds of lit candles onto
the water “The festival has become more popular
since the Sittaung Bridge connecting Shwe Kyin and
Madauk was opened in February 2003,” said U

The
passengers, hailing from a range of countries including

Myanmar dance performance on the cruise ship on their

The
quattro stagioni, while good, was too vinegary for
my taste. The spaghetti, covered in a delicious chunky
tomato sauce, was excellent but it is obviously the
pizza that lures the crowds.

“Here
I don’t know what they’re feeding me,
even though I pay US$1500 every semester. Until now
I didn’t like their food at all and I can’t
believe that people can fill their stomachs with one
small bucket of fried chicken and a cup of coffee,”

“According
to the rules of Muay Thai, it’s more of a technical
fight in which it is important to score points. So
Myanmar kickboxers need to be clever when they fight
because they’re used to fights that rely heavily

| ELE-PHANTASTIC: Costumed
dancers perform at the annual Elephant Dance Competition in
Kyaukse, a few miles south of Mandalay, on October 25. During
the two-day event, 19 teams wearing colourful elephant costumes
made of paper and cloth on bamboo frames performed dances
to the accompaniment of traditional music at the foot of Shwe
Tha Lyaung and Kha Shwe Taung mountains. The performers must
maintain perfect rhythm and timing to stay synchronised with
one another inside the costume. The traditional event has
been held in October every year for nearly 1000 years. Pic
