EVEN as he wrapped up his most recent visit to Myanmar last week, the United Nations special envoy, Mr Ibrahim Gambari, was invited to return to the country in the next few weeks, as his diplomatic efforts to promote national reconsolidation gain momentum. .....

“We now have a process going which would lead to substantive dialogue between the Government and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as a key instrument (in promoting national reconsolidation),” Mr Gambari said at the end of his six-day visit to Myanmar on November 9.

PRIME Minister General Thein Sein visited Laos and Vietnam last week to promote bilateral relations between Myanmar and the two countries.
The visit was the first overseas tour by the new prime minister after he was appointed to the post on October 24.

AN annual review meeting of the National AIDS Program (NAP) earlier this month highlighted a lack of funding as the main challenge in the fight to prevent HIV/AIDS and provide care for patients with the disease in Myanmar.

“In 2003 we held National Immunisation Day campaigns in Rakhine, Chin and Kachin states and Ayeyarwady, Sagaing and Tanintharyi divisions to prevent polio from coming into Myanmar from neighbouring countries,”

“We’ve built the dam up to 108 feet now. It has been designed with three sluice gates to avoid structural failure and two penstocks between the power intake and power station to generate 75 megawatts of power using four turbines,”

“There have been changes but we still have a lot to do to overcome various barriers – such as transportation, buildings, systems, attitudes and information – that exist in Myanmar,”

“We’ve sold more than 200,000 yuan worth gemstones each day and we’re all busy. We also made contacts with potential long-term wholesale customers here.” ....

THE Myanma Gems Enterprise will put nearly 6000 lots of jade up for sale at an emporium starting Wednesday, an MGE official said, predicting the auction would be a success despite moves by the West to limit Myanmar’s jade earnings through sanctions.

“Years ago I read an article about older people in foreign countries who were studying and getting degrees, and I envied them,” said Betty. “Then I thought, ‘Why can’t I do that?’ So I did.”

“In high school I realised that becoming a doctor would be harder than I thought,” she laughed. “My exam results weren’t up to scratch, so I decided to go in the creative direction and focus on painting.”

FINE-TUNING TIME FOR SEA GAMES SQUAD: Myanmar defender Han Win Aung (C) attempts to drive past midfielder Si Thu Than (2L) during a training session for the Myanmar under-23 squad at Aung San Stadium, Yangon, on November 8. Myanmar head coach Marcos Falopa will this week narrow down the squad from 22 players to the final 20 he will take to the Southeast Asian Games in Korat, Thailand, next month. The Brazilian manager said 14 members of the current under-23 squad remain from the team that faced China in Myanmar’s World Cup qualifying matches last month. And while those games ended in 7-0 and 4-0 defeats for Myanmar, Falopa said he was confident about the team’s chances at the December 6-15 SEA Games, where he will employ a 3-5-2 formation instead of the 4-3-3 approach he used against China. Myanmar has been drawn in Group A alongside Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia, while Group B comprises Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia and Laos.
