DREAM WEAVERS: Shwedagon Pagoda hosts its 23rd annual Tazaungdine robe weaving contest from dusk until dawn on the night of November 23-24. During the contest – which takes place every year on the pagoda platform on the eve of the full moon day of Tazaungdine – teams of women representing Buddhist organisations compete through the night to weave new matho thingan (unstale robes), which are then offered to Shwedagon’s Buddha images at dawn. The opening ceremony started at 5pm, when the board of trustees led a procession of religious organisations around the pagoda platform, which was decorated with colourful lanterns with illustrations of Jataka tales from the Buddha’s previous lives. The K250,000 first prize was won this year by the Ingar Sammadhi team, while Yaikyi Taw took home the K200,000 second prize. The third-place team was Aung Thitsar Sammadhi, which was awarded K150,000. Nine teams competed this year.
