THE Association of Southeast Asian Nations has entered a “new era” of cooperation that will pave the way for greater accountability within the grouping, the outgoing ASEAN secretary general, Mr Ong Keng Yong, said last week.

 

A SENIOR medical official from the Department of Health praised the efforts of eye surgeons in working to prevent blindness, at the 19th Ophthalmic Surgeons’ Conference held at the headquarters of the Myanmar Medical Associa-tion on November 19.

 

A MEDICAL specialist at Yangon Children Hospital has warned that kids undergoing traditional me-ka-laung therapy can contract infections if the needles used in the procedure are not sterilised properly.

“Many local traders couldn’t come to the mid-year gems emporium as they didn’t have foreign exchange earnings. So we expect more local traders will come to this sale,”

“We try to donate as much as we can to places that need help,” said Ko Aung Myo Thu. “I’m happy with the donations for the oxygen concentrator because it was the biggest amount of money we have raised so far – K2 million.”
 
He said the company hoped the helicopter service, which was launched on November 14 at a ceremony at Bangkok Hospital, would be used to facilitate the quick evacuation of emergency patients to Thailand from Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia.
 

“Only government motorcycles are allowed in Yangon but we have noticed that some people are riding unlicensed motorcycles in the city,” said Traffic Police Lieutenant Colonel Aung Naing, the commander of Yangon Division Wireless and Traffic Police Force.

 

Nearly K4 million were paid out as the result of a traffic accident in May in which a bus from Yangon’s No 33 line, under the Yangon Division Buses Control Committee Department (2), struck an electricity transformer and four vehicles near Moekaung Junction in Yankin township.

 

“When we analyse accident rates we see a general reduction for all types of vehicles except private cars, so we are paying more attention to those vehicles,” said Traffic Police Lieutenant Colonel Aung Naing, the commander of Yangon Division Wireless and Traffic Police Force.

 

INDIA has granted Myanmar a US$60-million loan to help fund construction of the Thahtay Chaung hydropower project in Rakhine State, monthly UK magazine International Water Power and Dam Construction reported last week.

 

“Qualified and out-standing medical people are essential,” he said, adding that the ministry has provided postgraduate training courses in the country and has also sent trainees abroad to learn modern medical techniques.

 

“The amusement park will have five entertainment centres. We plan to finish three by next month and open them to the public,” said U Wai Myo Aung, the deputy general manager of the company.

 

“We want young people who are doing well in their studies and who want advanced educations but can’t afford foreign universities, not to miss the chance to study overseas,”

 

A SERIES of cultural competitions have been organised for visually impaired performers in the coming days to commemorate International Day for Disabled Persons, which falls on December 3, said Daw Yu Yu Swe, the principal of Kyeemyindaing School for the Blind in Yangon.

 

COX’S BAZAR, Bangladesh – Bangladesh resumed rice imports from Myanmar on November 12 after a one-and-a-half-year break in a move designed to bring down the soaring prices of the staple on the domestic market.

 

“We are happy to have the chance to attend the show and learn about Japanese culture,” said Ma Yu Yu Aung, an audience member who is taking Japanese language courses.

 

The resort sits on a 4.5-acre swathe of land along the beach that was formerly occupied by the Ayaroo hotel, which was torn down in November 2005. “We demolished the former Ayaroo hotel because it was not modern enough and did not match the style we now want,”

 

Myanmar has some top-class dive sites in the Myeik Archipelago and the Bay of Bengal off either Chaungtha or Ngwe Saung beaches, but try as I might I could not arrange an affordable holiday....

“We left our top boxers – three men and two women – here. We don’t want our competitors to see our players’ ability before the SEA Games,” national boxing coach U San Myint said at the team’s training camp in Yangon.
